The Great Andes Traverse

We will welcome you at Arequipa Airport and transfer to our hotel, a refined colonial mansion in the historic heart of the city. The remainder of the day is at leisure, allowing time to rest, explore the plaza, or orient yourself to the volcanic light and luminous stone that define Arequipa.

Hotel: Casa Andina Premium – Arequipa (3 nights)

Today blends exploration and acclimatization. We begin in the Yanahuara neighborhood, with its sweeping views of the city and volcanoes beyond. A visit to the bustling San Camilo Market and the Juanita Mummy Museum adds texture to the day, while ample time in the afternoon allows you to capture the shifting light across Arequipa’s baroque stone façades.

We will explore the atmospheric Santa Catalina Monastery, a city within a city of cloisters, colors, and shadows. The rest of the day is for wandering or resting, giving you time to make contact with the light and space that are hallmarks of this region.

Departing Arequipa, we journey into one of the planet’s deepest canyons. Volcanic highlands give way to amphitheaters of stone and shadow. Scenic stops along the way offer expansive horizons framed by grazing camelids and ancient terraces.

Hotel: Aranwa Pueblito Encantado – Colca Canyon (2 nights)

At dawn, we stand at Cruz del Condor, where colossal condors ride thermal currents against the backdrop of immense canyon walls. The afternoon is unstructured, allowing extended time to absorb the canyon’s shifting light and quiet.

Our route follows a road less traveled through the Southern Andes, past dramatic forms at Tres Cañones and Suykutambo. We arrive in Checacupe, a quiet village with colonial stone architecture and open highland plains.

An early departure brings the surreal ridges of Palccoyo, where mineral bands ripple across the high snowgrass. From here, we continue across the Altiplano toward the sacred waters of Lake Titicaca.

Hotel: GHL Lake Titicaca Hotel – Puno (2 nights)

We explore the floating totora reed islands of the Uros and the terraced slopes of Taquile Island, each offering unique light and visual narrative against the backdrop of the vast lake.

We follow Lake Titicaca’s shore into Bolivia, arriving in La Paz via cable car — a dramatic visual approach into one of South America’s most horizontal cities.

Hotel: Illampu Hotel – La Paz (2 nights)

Today we explore the city’s layered topography and the wind-sculpted spires of Moon Valley. The evening brings a curated Andean performance — a moment of cultural resonance.

A flight into Uyuni brings us to the white infinity of the Salar, where reflections and horizon blur into abstraction at sunset.

Hotel: Luna Salada Hotel – Uyuni (2 nights)

We cross the salt flats, visiting cactus islands, salt formations, and expansive white desert planes. Lunch on the flats and continued field time in the open expanse define this day.

Heading south, we encounter high-altitude lagoons — Charcota, Hedionda, Honda, and Cañapa — each framed by volcanoes and home to resident flamingos. Wind-carved formations in the Siloli Desert provide dramatic compositions.

Hotel: Tayka del Desierto Lodge (1 night)

We traverse geothermal fields, colored lagoons, and arid salt flats before crossing into Chile. By sunset we arrive in San Pedro de Atacama, toasting the desert light.

Hotel: Hotel Noi – San Pedro de Atacama (3 nights)

Today takes us through the Atacama Salt Flats and highland lagoons, including Laguna Chaxa, Piedras Rojas, Miscanti, and Miñiques — an array of color, horizon, and geology unmatched in its clarity and scale.

A private transfer takes us to Calama Airport for onward flights. Reflections, horizons, and altitude memory remain with us.
