This expedition explores the northern Pantanal during a carefully chosen shoulder season, when wildlife activity remains strong and river conditions allow for extended, unhurried time in the field, without peak-season crowding.
The journey unfolds primarily on the river, within a well established jaguar corridor. Patient observation often reveals not just sightings, but behavior shaped by light, water levels, and time rather than fixed schedules.
While jaguars are a central focus, the Pantanal offers exceptional biodiversity; from giant river otters and capybaras to caimans, monkeys and abundant birdlife experienced as part of a living ecosystem, not a checklist.

Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Cuiabá | Welcome to the Journey
Upon arrival in Cuiabá, we’ll meet you at the airport and transfer you to a carefully selected hotel, allowing for a relaxed transition before entering the Pantanal.
In the evening, we gather for a welcome dinner; a convivial introduction to your fellow travelers and local guides. This is a chance to settle in, review safety and logistics, share photography tips and outline the jaguar-focused goals that will shape the days ahead.

Day 2 – Journey into the Heart of the Pantanal
After breakfast, we set out toward the Pantanal, traveling on paved roads before reaching the gateway to the legendary Transpantaneira, a 147 km (91-mile) dirt road crossing the vast wetlands via more than 120 wooden bridges.
As we move deeper into this extraordinary landscape, wildlife begins to reveal itself. Caimans, capybaras and abundant birdlife are often seen even before reaching our lodge.
We arrive at Fazenda Santa Teresa Pantanal Lodge in time for lunch, followed by our first afternoon excursion, an introduction to the ecosystems that make this region one of South America’s richest wildlife sanctuaries.

Day 3 – Into Jaguarland | Porto Jofre & First River Safari
Continuing south along the Transpantaneira, each mile brings new sightings, jabiru storks, marsh deer and howler monkeys are commonly encountered.
By midday, we reach Porto Jofre and board private skiffs for a short transfer to our floating base, the Naturezas Ship, anchored in a privileged location in the heart of Jaguarland.
After lunch aboard, we head out for our first jaguar safari, exploring river channels and forested banks in search of jaguars, giant river otters and the remarkable birdlife of the northern Pantanal.

Day 4 – In the Realm of Jaguars | Full Day on the River
Today is dedicated entirely to exploring the northern Pantanal, home to the highest concentration of wild jaguars anywhere on Earth.
Morning and afternoon skiff excursions take us deep into remote waterways and gallery forests, prime habitat for these powerful cats. Along the way, we watch for giant river otters, capybaras, caimans, anacondas and an extraordinary diversity of birds.
With ample, unhurried time on the water, we allow encounters to unfold naturally, maximizing both the quality and depth of observation.
Day 5 – Deeper into Jaguarland | Following the River’s Rhythms
Another full day immersed in Jaguarland, shaped by light, water levels and animal movement rather than fixed schedules.
By now, we’ve begun to recognize the rhythms of this ecosystem — the stillness before a jaguar appears, the sudden splash of a caiman, the calls of macaws echoing overhead. No two outings are ever the same and today brings fresh opportunities for discovery and awe as we continue exploring this intricate network of rivers and forested banks.
Day 6 – Farewell to Jaguarland | Return to Santa Teresa
We head out early for one final river excursion, savoring our last moments in this remarkable jaguar corridor.
Late morning, we begin our journey north, retracing the Transpantaneira with continued opportunities for wildlife sightings along the way. We arrive back at Fazenda Santa Teresa Lodge in time for lunch and a short rest, followed by an afternoon excursion that offers a different perspective on the Pantanal landscape.

Day 7 – From the Pantanal to Home
At first light, we climb the lodge’s observation tower to watch the Pantanal awaken in soft golden hues.
After breakfast, we begin the return drive toward Cuiabá, keeping watch for final sightings along the Transpantaneira. A relaxed lunch is enjoyed en route before arriving at the airport in the afternoon for onward flights or further travels in South America.

How likely am I to see a jaguar?
The northern Pantanal is one of the best places on Earth to see wild jaguars. Because we spend several full days on the river in prime territory, most groups see multiple jaguars in different behaviours.
These are truly wild cats, so I can’t promise specific sightings — and that’s part of what makes it so special.
What level of fitness do I need?
This is a low-impact wildlife journey. Most activities are done by boat, with short walks around the lodge. If you’re comfortable getting in and out of small boats and walking on uneven ground occasionally, you’ll be fine.
Is this trip suitable for solo travellers?
Yes. Many guests join solo. The group size is small, and days on the river naturally bring people together. If you’d like, we can also advise on single room/cabin options depending on the departure.
What is the typical age range in the group?
Most travellers are curious, nature-focused adults — often in their 40s to 70s. What matters most is a shared love of wildlife, a calm pace, and being out in nature for long, rewarding days.
What camera gear do you recommend?
A zoom lens in the 100–400mm range is ideal, plus a wider lens for landscapes and lodge life. A bean bag or small support helps in boats, and spare batteries are useful in the heat. If you’re not a photographer, a good phone and binoculars are more than enough.
